We back up everything that matters — databases, application data, configuration files, secrets, SSL certificates, infrastructure-as-code repositories, and server images. Each data type gets an appropriate backup method: logical dumps for databases, filesystem snapshots for volumes, and encrypted archives for configuration. Nothing falls through the cracks.

Backup schedules are tailored to data criticality and change frequency. Transaction databases get continuous WAL/binlog archiving for point-in-time recovery. Application uploads get hourly incremental backups. Configuration files are backed up on every change through version control. Static assets get daily snapshots. You define the RPO; we engineer the backup schedule to meet it.

All backups are encrypted at rest using AES-256 before leaving the source server. Encryption keys are managed through a dedicated key management system with access controls and rotation policies. Even if backup storage is compromised, the data remains unreadable without the encryption keys.

Backups are replicated to a geographically separate AnubizHost location over encrypted transport. The offsite copy protects against data center-level events — fires, floods, power failures, or network outages. Retention policies are enforced independently at each location, and we verify that offsite copies are complete and restorable.

We test restore procedures on a regular schedule — weekly for critical databases, monthly for other data types. Each test restores the backup to an isolated environment, verifies data integrity through checksums and application-level consistency checks, and measures the actual recovery time. Test results are logged and included in your monthly operations report.

Restore tests occasionally reveal issues: corrupted backup files, changed schemas that break restore scripts, or increased data volume that exceeds RTO targets. We catch these issues during routine testing — not during an actual disaster when the stakes are highest. Every failed restore test triggers an immediate investigation and fix.

We implement retention policies that balance storage costs with recovery requirements. Common patterns include daily backups retained for 30 days, weekly backups retained for 12 weeks, and monthly backups retained for 12 months. Custom retention periods accommodate regulatory requirements for healthcare, finance, and legal industries.

Backup audit trails document every backup execution, verification result, and retention action. These logs provide evidence for compliance audits showing that backups run on schedule, are tested regularly, and are retained according to policy.
