Database Replication Across Regions
We configure asynchronous streaming replication for PostgreSQL and MySQL to a standby in a secondary region. Replication lag is monitored continuously — if it exceeds your RPO threshold, alerts fire immediately. For AWS, we leverage RDS Cross-Region Read Replicas or Aurora Global Database with sub-second replication lag. For self-managed databases, we use pgBackRest or orchestrator with automated promotion scripts.
Object Storage Replication
S3 Cross-Region Replication (CRR) copies backup objects to a secondary region automatically. We configure replication rules with prefix and tag filters, encryption in transit, and replication time control (S3 RTC) for 15-minute SLA when needed. The destination bucket has independent lifecycle rules and access policies. Replication metrics and CloudWatch alarms alert on replication failures or lag.
Application State and Configuration
Beyond databases and storage, we replicate everything needed to run your application: container images pushed to registries in both regions, Kubernetes manifests in a GitOps repo accessible from both clusters, DNS records with health-checked failover, and secrets synced through Vault replication or AWS Secrets Manager cross-region replication. The goal: your secondary region can serve production traffic with a DNS change.
Failover Testing and Monitoring
We implement automated replication lag monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana dashboards showing per-region status. Quarterly failover drills verify that the secondary region can serve production traffic. We measure actual failover time, data consistency post-failover, and application behavior during the switch. Each drill produces a gap analysis report with remediation items.
