IMAP Email Hosting — Synced Mail Access Across All Devices

IMAP is the standard protocol for accessing email from multiple devices while keeping everything synchronized. AnubizHost IMAP email hosting runs on Dovecot — the most widely deployed and trusted IMAP server — with NVMe storage for fast mailbox access, full-text search for finding any message instantly, and encrypted connections to protect your email on every device.

Start a Brief

Why IMAP for Modern Email

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) keeps your email stored on the server and synchronized across every device you use. Read a message on your phone, and it is marked as read on your laptop. Move a message to a folder on your desktop, and the change appears on your tablet. Unlike POP3, which downloads messages to a single device and optionally deletes them from the server, IMAP gives you a consistent view of your mailbox everywhere.

Modern email usage demands IMAP. People access email from phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and webmail interfaces — often switching between them throughout the day. Without IMAP, managing email across devices becomes a fragmented experience with duplicate messages, inconsistent read status, and missing folders.

AnubizHost IMAP hosting is built on Dovecot, the gold standard for IMAP servers. Dovecot handles millions of concurrent connections worldwide and is known for its performance, reliability, and standards compliance. Our Dovecot configuration is optimized for fast mailbox access, efficient search, and low memory usage even with large mailboxes.

Performance and Storage

Email accumulates over years, and mailboxes with tens of thousands of messages need fast, indexed access to remain usable. Our IMAP servers store mailboxes on NVMe SSD arrays that provide sub-millisecond access times, making folder listing, message fetching, and search operations nearly instantaneous even on large mailboxes.

Full-text search is powered by Dovecot's FTS (Full-Text Search) plugin backed by Solr or Xapian indexing. Search across all your mail — subject lines, body text, sender names, and attachment filenames — with results returned in milliseconds. No more waiting for your email client to download and scan thousands of messages locally.

Storage allocations are generous across all plans, with options ranging from 10GB per account for personal use to unlimited storage for enterprise deployments. Mailbox quotas are configurable per account, and administrators receive notifications when accounts approach their limits. IMAP QUOTA extension support means your email client can display remaining storage directly in its interface.

Security and Encryption

All IMAP connections are encrypted using TLS 1.2 or 1.3, with strong cipher suites enforced and weak protocols disabled. We support IMAP over TLS (port 993) for implicit encryption and STARTTLS on the standard IMAP port (143) for opportunistic encryption. Either way, your credentials and email content are protected from eavesdropping in transit.

Authentication uses SASL with bcrypt-hashed passwords, providing strong resistance against credential theft even if the password database is compromised. Optional two-factor authentication adds another layer of protection for webmail access. Client certificate authentication is available for organizations that want certificate-based IMAP access without passwords.

On the server side, mailbox data is stored on LUKS-encrypted volumes, protecting against physical access to the storage media. Dovecot's mail_crypt plugin provides per-user encryption of mailbox contents, adding an additional encryption layer beyond full-disk encryption. Each user's mail is encrypted with a key derived from their password, making it inaccessible to administrators and other users on the same server.

Client Compatibility and Setup

AnubizHost IMAP hosting works with every standard email client: Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail, K-9 Mail, FairEmail, Evolution, and any other client that supports the IMAP protocol. Mobile clients on iOS and Android connect seamlessly, with IDLE (push) support for real-time new mail notifications without battery-draining polling.

We provide auto-configuration via Thunderbird's autoconfig, Apple Mail's configuration profiles, and SRV DNS records that enable automatic setup in clients that support service discovery. For clients that require manual configuration, step-by-step guides cover the IMAP server address, port, encryption type, and authentication settings for every major platform.

Sieve filtering is supported for server-side mail rules that work regardless of which client you use. Create rules that sort incoming mail into folders, forward messages, set flags, or reject spam — all executed on the server before any client connects. Sieve rules are managed through the Roundcube webmail interface or through any Sieve-compatible client plugin.
