Load Balancing Algorithms
HAProxy supports multiple algorithms: roundrobin for evenly distributed traffic, leastconn for long-lived connections (WebSocket, databases), source for session affinity by client IP, uri for cache-friendly distribution, and hdr for routing based on HTTP headers. We match the algorithm to your application's connection and session characteristics.
Health Checks
HAProxy checks backend health via TCP connection, HTTP request, or custom health check scripts. We configure check intervals, fall/rise thresholds, and HTTP status code expectations. Failed backends are removed from rotation within seconds. Recovery re-adds them after passing consecutive health checks. Agent checks let backends voluntarily signal their readiness.
SSL Termination & Security
HAProxy terminates TLS with hardware-accelerated performance. We configure TLS 1.3 priority, SNI-based certificate selection for multi-domain setups, OCSP stapling, and client certificate authentication where required. Stick tables track connection rates for DDoS mitigation. ACLs block suspicious patterns. The statistics page is secured with authentication and IP restrictions.
High Availability
A single HAProxy instance is a single point of failure. We deploy HAProxy in active-passive pairs with keepalived managing a floating virtual IP. If the primary fails, the secondary assumes the VIP within milliseconds. For cloud environments, we use cloud-native floating IPs or NLB in front of HAProxy instances. Configuration sync ensures both nodes stay in lockstep.
