Every migration starts with a thorough assessment of your current environment. Our team audits your existing server configuration — operating system, installed software, web server setup, database engines, cron jobs, SSL certificates, DNS records, and custom configurations. You receive a migration plan document that outlines every step: what we will transfer, how we will transfer it, the estimated timeline, the testing checklist, and the cutover procedure. You review and approve the plan before we begin. There are no surprises during migration — every step is documented and agreed upon in advance.

We transfer your data using the most efficient method for your specific situation. For most migrations, we use rsync over SSH for file data — it is encrypted, resumable, and handles the initial bulk transfer followed by incremental synchronization. Database migration uses native dump/restore tools with replication setup for zero-downtime cutover.

Large migrations (multiple terabytes) may use parallel transfer streams, compressed transport, or direct data center interconnects depending on the source and destination locations. We always perform an initial bulk transfer, then run incremental synchronization until the delta is small enough for a rapid cutover. This approach means the actual downtime window — if any — is measured in seconds, not hours.

Before cutting over DNS, we test the migrated environment thoroughly. Web applications are tested with modified hosts files to access the new server directly. Database integrity checks verify row counts, checksum comparisons, and application-level data validation. Performance benchmarks compare the new environment against the old to confirm improvements.

Our testing checklist includes:

• All websites load correctly with proper CSS, JS, and media assets
• Forms, authentication, and dynamic features work as expected
• Email delivery (if applicable) sends and receives correctly
• SSL certificates are valid and properly configured
• Cron jobs execute on schedule with correct permissions
• Database queries return expected results

Once testing confirms the new environment is ready, we coordinate the DNS cutover with you. For most migrations, we lower DNS TTL values 24-48 hours before cutover to ensure rapid propagation. At the agreed time, we perform a final data synchronization, update DNS records, and verify resolution from multiple geographic locations.

Post-migration, we monitor both the old and new servers during the DNS propagation period to ensure no requests are lost. The old server remains available as a fallback for 72 hours after cutover — if any issue arises, we can revert DNS in minutes while we investigate. After the propagation period, you confirm satisfaction and we decommission the migration configuration. The entire process, from assessment to completion, typically takes 3-5 business days for standard migrations.
