Network Monitoring

Ping checks tell you a host is up. They don't tell you about packet loss, latency jitter, bandwidth saturation, or unauthorized traffic. We deploy network monitoring that gives you visibility into what's actually happening — traffic flows, latency distributions, and anomalies that indicate problems before they become outages.

Start a Brief

Flow Analysis

VPC Flow Logs (AWS), VPC Flow Logs (GCP), or NetFlow/sFlow from network devices feed into analysis tools. We set up flow log aggregation in Elasticsearch or ClickHouse for historical analysis. Dashboards show top talkers, traffic patterns between services, and unexpected cross-network communication. Flow data powers both troubleshooting ('why is service A talking to service B?') and security analysis ('who's connecting to the database?').

Latency & Performance Tracking

Blackbox exporters measure TCP, ICMP, DNS, and HTTP latency from multiple vantage points. Smokeping-style multi-probe monitoring catches intermittent packet loss and jitter. Per-hop latency analysis (MTR data) identifies which network segment is causing delays. Dashboards show latency distributions (P50/P95/P99) between service pairs — not just averages that hide problems.

Bandwidth & Utilization

SNMP or cloud-native metrics track interface utilization on routers, switches, and virtual network interfaces. NAT Gateway throughput, VPN tunnel bandwidth, and inter-region transfer get monitored. Alerts fire on sustained high utilization before links saturate. Historical trends feed capacity planning — you add bandwidth before you need it, not after an outage.

Anomaly Detection & Alerting

Baseline traffic patterns enable anomaly detection — sudden traffic spikes, new communication paths, or unusual protocol usage trigger alerts. Alert routing separates network issues (pager) from informational events (Slack). Runbooks link from alerts to troubleshooting steps. Network monitoring integrates with your existing observability stack (Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, or your SIEM) — not a separate island.
