Privacy Tools for Tor on Android and iOS

Mobile devices present unique privacy challenges for Tor users. Smartphones constantly broadcast location data, connect to cell towers, and run apps that phone home to corporate servers. Despite these challenges, it is possible to use Tor effectively on mobile with the right tools and practices. This guide covers the best Tor-compatible apps for Android and iOS and the OPSEC considerations specific to mobile devices.

Start a Brief

Tor Browser for Android — Official Mobile Tor

Tor Browser for Android is the official Tor Project mobile browser. It provides the same fingerprinting resistance and privacy protections as the desktop version, including NoScript, HTTPS-Only mode, and standardized browser fingerprint. Download it from Google Play or F-Droid (Guardian Project repository).

Tor Browser for Android routes all browser traffic through the Tor network automatically. It uses the same circuit isolation as desktop Tor Browser — each website gets its own circuit, preventing cross-site tracking through Tor exit nodes. Bookmarks and history can be configured to clear on exit.

Limitations: Tor Browser for Android only protects traffic within the browser. Other apps on your phone continue to connect directly to the internet, potentially leaking your IP address and location. For system-wide Tor protection, use Orbot in conjunction with Tor Browser.

Orbot — System-Wide Tor for Android

Orbot is a Tor proxy app that can route all device traffic through the Tor network using Android's VPN functionality. When Orbot's VPN mode is active, every app on your device — not just the browser — sends traffic through Tor. This prevents apps from revealing your real IP address.

Orbot supports app-specific routing, allowing you to choose which apps go through Tor and which connect directly. This is useful for apps that do not work over Tor (like video streaming) while keeping sensitive apps protected. Configure Signal, Briar, and email apps to use Orbot while leaving low-risk apps on the regular connection.

Install Orbot from Google Play, F-Droid (Guardian Project), or the Tor Project's website. For maximum privacy on Android, use Orbot together with Tor Browser, a privacy-focused email app, and an encrypted messenger. Combine with a VPN for layered network protection.

iOS Privacy — Onion Browser and Limitations

Onion Browser is the recommended Tor browser for iOS. It is open source and endorsed by the Tor Project. However, Apple's restrictions on iOS mean that Onion Browser cannot provide the same level of fingerprinting resistance as Tor Browser on Android or desktop. iOS forces all browsers to use WebKit, limiting Onion Browser's ability to standardize the browser fingerprint.

There is no Orbot equivalent for iOS that provides system-wide Tor routing. Some VPN apps can route traffic through Tor-like networks, but they do not provide the same anonymity guarantees as the actual Tor network. iOS users serious about privacy should consider switching to Android (particularly GrapheneOS or CalyxOS) or using a dedicated device.

For basic Tor browsing on iOS — accessing .onion sites, browsing with more privacy than Safari — Onion Browser is adequate. For high-security use cases, iOS is fundamentally limited by Apple's walled garden approach and should not be relied upon as a primary Tor device.
