Using Signal Messenger with Tor Proxy
Signal is widely regarded as the most secure mainstream messaging app, with end-to-end encryption enabled by default for all messages and calls. However, Signal still requires a phone number and connects to Signal's servers directly, exposing your IP address. Routing Signal through Tor adds a critical layer of metadata protection that shields your network identity from both Signal and network observers.

Why Route Signal Through Tor
Signal encrypts your message contents, but the Signal server still sees your IP address, when you are online, and the phone numbers you communicate with. While Signal's protocol minimizes metadata collection through features like Sealed Sender, your ISP can still see that you are connecting to Signal's infrastructure and when you send or receive messages.
By routing Signal through Tor, you prevent your ISP from knowing you use Signal, and you prevent Signal's servers from learning your real IP address. This is particularly important for users in countries where Signal is blocked or where using encrypted messaging tools is itself suspicious and could attract unwanted attention.
Combining Signal with Tor also protects against local network attacks. If you are on a public Wi-Fi network or a network controlled by an adversary, Tor ensures they cannot see your Signal traffic or perform traffic analysis to determine when and how often you communicate.
Configuring Signal Desktop with Tor
Signal Desktop supports proxy connections. On Linux, launch Signal Desktop with the proxy environment variables: ALL_PROXY=socks5://127.0.0.1:9050 signal-desktop. This routes all Signal traffic through the local Tor SOCKS5 proxy. Ensure the Tor service is running on your system before launching Signal.
On Windows and macOS, you can configure system-wide proxy settings or use a tool like Proxifier to route Signal Desktop traffic through Tor's SOCKS5 port at 127.0.0.1:9050. Signal does not have a built-in proxy settings menu in the GUI, so OS-level or third-party proxy configuration is required.
On Android, Orbot provides Tor connectivity for mobile apps. Install Orbot from F-Droid or Google Play, start the Tor connection, and enable VPN mode. Then configure Signal to use Orbot as its proxy in Signal's settings under Data and Storage. This forces Signal traffic through the Tor network on your mobile device.
Limitations and Privacy Considerations
Signal requires a phone number for registration, which is a significant privacy limitation that Tor cannot solve. To mitigate this, consider registering Signal with a VoIP number or a prepaid SIM purchased with cash. Some services offer temporary phone numbers for SMS verification, though Signal has been blocking many VoIP numbers.
Tor introduces latency that may affect Signal's real-time features. Voice and video calls over Tor will experience higher latency and may be unreliable. Text messaging works well, but expect slight delays in message delivery compared to a direct connection.
Signal's Sealed Sender feature already hides the sender's identity from Signal's servers for messages to contacts who have your profile. When combined with Tor, this creates a strong metadata protection stack — Signal cannot see your IP, and the message headers do not reveal who sent the message. Use VPN plus Tor for an additional layer of network obfuscation.
Host a Signal Proxy on AnubizHost
In countries where Signal is blocked, you can run a Signal TLS proxy to help others connect. AnubizHost provides the ideal infrastructure for this: offshore servers in Iceland, Romania, and Finland where censorship bypass tools are fully legal and protected by strong privacy laws.
Deploy a Signal proxy on a Tor-optimized VPS from AnubizHost. Our servers come with DDoS protection, high-bandwidth connectivity, and full root access. Pay with Monero, Bitcoin, or other cryptocurrencies — no KYC, no identity verification, no personal data collected.
By hosting a Signal proxy on AnubizHost, you help users in censored regions access private communications while maintaining your own anonymity. Our offshore infrastructure ensures your proxy cannot be easily taken down by authoritarian governments. Start hosting today with our crypto-friendly Tor hosting plans.
