VPS for VPN Server: Host Your Own Private VPN Offshore
Commercial VPN providers promise no-logs policies but you have no way to verify. Running your own VPN on an AnubizHost offshore VPS gives you complete control — you know exactly what is logged (nothing, if you configure it that way), who has access, and which jurisdiction governs your data. Set up WireGuard or OpenVPN in minutes and browse with true privacy.

Why Self-Host Your VPN
Commercial VPN services are black boxes. They claim zero-log policies, but multiple providers have been caught logging user activity and handing data to authorities. When you run your own VPN on a VPS, you control the software, the configuration, and the logging policy. Trust is replaced by verifiability.
A self-hosted VPN also performs better. Commercial VPNs route thousands of users through shared servers, leading to congestion and slow speeds. Your AnubizHost VPS handles only your traffic, delivering the full bandwidth of your plan — typically 1 Gbps — without contention.
Offshore hosting adds another layer of protection. AnubizHost operates from jurisdictions that do not participate in mass surveillance agreements, and we do not respond to foreign data requests without a local court order. Your VPN exit point is genuinely private.
WireGuard vs OpenVPN: Choose Your Protocol
WireGuard is the modern choice — faster handshakes, lower latency, and a codebase small enough to audit in an afternoon (4,000 lines vs OpenVPN's 100,000+). It runs in the kernel for maximum throughput and uses state-of-the-art cryptography (ChaCha20, Curve25519, BLAKE2s). On our VPS, WireGuard saturates 1 Gbps links with minimal CPU usage.
OpenVPN remains the most compatible option. It works on every operating system, supports TCP fallback for restrictive networks (hotels, airports, corporate firewalls), and has decades of security auditing behind it. If you need to connect legacy devices, OpenVPN is the safer bet.
You can run both on the same VPS. WireGuard on UDP port 51820 for daily use, and OpenVPN on TCP port 443 (disguised as HTTPS) for situations where UDP is blocked. AnubizHost does not restrict any ports or protocols.
One-Command Setup Scripts
Setting up a VPN server should not require a networking degree. We recommend battle-tested setup scripts like wg-easy for WireGuard (includes a web UI for managing clients) or Nyr's openvpn-install for OpenVPN. Both run with a single command and produce ready-to-import client configurations.
For more advanced setups, install Algo VPN (from Trail of Bits) which deploys WireGuard with automatic key rotation, or Streisand which bundles multiple protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN, Shadowsocks, OpenConnect) behind a self-hosted gateway portal.
After setup, generate client configs for each device — phone, laptop, tablet, router — and import them with a QR code or config file. Each device gets its own key pair, so revoking access for a lost device does not affect your other connections.
Deploy Your VPN VPS
A VPN server is lightweight. Our smallest plan (1 vCPU / 1 GB RAM) handles WireGuard for up to 20 simultaneous clients without breaking a sweat. If you plan to route a family or small team through the VPN, 2 vCPU / 2 GB provides comfortable headroom.
Choose a server location based on your needs: pick a node geographically close to you for lowest latency, or pick one in a specific country to access region-locked content. We offer multiple offshore locations across Europe.
Your VPS is ready in under a minute. Run the setup script, download your client configs, and you are connected to your own private VPN within 10 minutes of signing up. AnubizHost gives you the infrastructure — you own the privacy.
