When to Choose Ceph
Ceph shines when you need three storage modalities - object, block, and file - from one platform. It scales horizontally from a few terabytes to petabytes by adding OSDs. It tolerates node failure transparently via replication or erasure coding. It integrates with OpenStack, Kubernetes via Rook, Proxmox, and most virtualization platforms. For private cloud builders Ceph is the de facto storage backend in 2026.
The tradeoff is operational complexity. Ceph requires careful planning of monitor nodes, OSD layout, network topology, and CRUSH rules. A minimum production cluster needs 3 monitor nodes and 3 OSD nodes - 6 VPS total. For workloads that fit in a single MinIO or Garage instance, those are simpler choices. Ceph earns its complexity at scale or when you need block storage alongside object.
