Why I2P and what a router does
I2P focuses on in-network services (eepsites, IRC, BitTorrent) with strong sender-receiver anonymity. A router participates in garlic routing by forwarding encrypted bundles for other nodes. A stable high-bandwidth router is more useful than ten flaky low-bandwidth ones. I2P is distinct from Tor - it is not optimized for clearnet browsing but is excellent for in-network use cases.
Install and sizing
Install i2pd (the C++ implementation, lighter than the Java reference) from the upstream apt repo on Ubuntu LTS. Configure as a transit-enabled router with reasonable bandwidth share. 2 vCPU 4 GB RAM is sufficient for a heavy transit router. Bandwidth is the binding resource: high-bandwidth routers significantly improve network throughput, but you must size your plan's bandwidth cap accordingly.
