Yggdrasil basics
Yggdrasil assigns each node a permanent IPv6 address derived from its long-term public key. Packets are routed through the spanning tree of public peers. End-to-end traffic is encrypted independently of the link encryption between peers. A public peer is just a Yggdrasil node that has published its address in the public peers list and accepts inbound peer connections.
Install and sizing
Install the yggdrasil package from the upstream repository on Ubuntu LTS. Generate keys (yggdrasil -genconf > /etc/yggdrasil.conf). Open a TCP or QUIC listener port in the config. Enable the systemd unit. Submit your peer to the public-peers Yggdrasil-Network repository so others can find it. Resource use is light - 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM is enough for moderate public-peer load. Choose a 2 vCPU 4 GB plan if you also want headroom for other services.

A useful public peer stays online for the long run. Monitor uptime, watch for kernel updates that require reboot, and publish planned downtime in the peer's contact email. The Yggdrasil community is small and helpful; engage with it.
