Jami Architecture
Jami accounts are public-key based. OpenDHT distributes account presence and routing hints. When two peers want to connect, they use the DHT to find each other and then establish a direct P2P call. If NAT prevents direct connection, a TURN relay carries media.
The default Jami project runs public DHT bootstraps and TURN relays. Running your own gives you organisational resilience and better latency for your local user base.
Romania Position
EU networking, NVMe storage, 1Gbps. For a DHT bootstrap CPU is modest (2 vCPU plenty). For a busy TURN relay, network is the gating factor - 1Gbps handles roughly 1000 concurrent G.711 relayed calls.
Build
Debian 12, OpenDHT compiled or packaged, coturn for TURN, jami-daemon if you also want a registered account node. 2-4 vCPU, 4-8GB RAM, 50-100GB NVMe, 1Gbps.
TLS and Authentication
TURN authentication via long-term credentials or short-term tokens. We document the configuration for both. TLS-protected TURN (port 5349) for trust-zone constrained networks.
Privacy
Jami media is end-to-end encrypted between peers. TURN relays see encrypted media bytes but not the cleartext. DHT operators see public key fingerprints, not message content.
