Why Running Your Own Blockchain Node Matters

A blockchain full node independently validates every transaction and block according to the protocol rules. When you run a full node, you do not trust anyone else's representation of the blockchain state - you verify it yourself. This is the foundational principle of trustless blockchain systems, and it applies to every use case from personal finance sovereignty to enterprise application infrastructure.

For individuals, running a Bitcoin or Monero full node means your wallet software connects to your own node rather than a third-party server. Storage and Bandwidth Requirements for Common Blockchain Nodes

Storage requirements for blockchain nodes vary significantly by chain and node type. Bitcoin's full node (using Bitcoin Core) requires approximately 600 GB of storage for the full blockchain as of mid-2025, growing at roughly 60-70 GB per year. A pruned Bitcoin node can operate with as little as 10 GB by discarding historical block data, but cannot serve historical block data to other nodes. Our Bitcoin Full Node product includes sufficient NVMe storage for a full (non-pruned) node with headroom for several years of chain growth.

Ethereum full nodes (with Geth or Nethermind) in default mode require approximately 1-2 TB for the full chain state and history. Archive nodes that retain the full historical state trie require over 10 TB and grow at hundreds of GB per month. Standard Ethereum full nodes (pruned) are well served by our higher-tier VPS plans with 100+ GB NVMe storage.

Monero's blockchain is approximately 170 GB as of 2025 and grows more slowly than Bitcoin due to transaction pruning capabilities in the Monero protocol. Our Monero Full Node product is provisioned with storage sized for the full chain plus operational headroom. Monero nodes also benefit from faster CPUs for the computationally intensive ring signature verification required for transaction validation.

Bandwidth consumption for blockchain nodes is driven by the number of peer connections and transaction/block relay activity. Bitcoin and Monero full nodes with default peer limits consume 30-100 GB per month of bandwidth in normal operation. Ethereum nodes consume more bandwidth due to higher transaction throughput. Setting Up a Full Node on AnubizHost VPS

Setting up a blockchain full node on a freshly provisioned VPS follows a standard process. After receiving your SSH credentials, connect to your server and update the operating system packages. Then install the node software from the official project repository - avoid third-party package repositories that might ship modified binaries.

For Bitcoin Core, download the binary from bitcoincore.org and verify the signature against the developer key. Create a configuration file specifying your data directory, RPC settings (if you need RPC access for wallets or applications), and peer connection limits. Start the daemon with the appropriate options and monitor the initial block download (IBD) process - Bitcoin's IBD currently takes 2-5 days on modern hardware and a fast internet connection. Our server bandwidth does not throttle during IBD.

For Monero, download monerod from the official getmonero.org site and verify the SHA-256 checksum. Create a configuration file specifying your data directory, RPC bind address, and any restricted RPC flags appropriate for your use case. The Monero IBD is faster than Bitcoin's, typically completing in under 24 hours on a server with fast NVMe storage. For Ethereum, choose a client (Geth, Nethermind, or Besu) and an execution/consensus client pair for post-Merge operation. The Ethereum IBD is the most storage-intensive and takes several days.

For production node deployments that require high availability, consider running a primary and a backup node in different datacenter locations, with your application configured to fail over to the backup if the primary becomes unreachable. Dedicated Node Products vs Custom VPS Configurations

Lightning node operation requires the underlying Bitcoin node to be fully synced and running at all times, which is why dedicated hardware is strongly recommended over VPS for production Lightning nodes.
