Bulletproof Hosting with Backup Solutions - Protect Your Offshore Data

Backups are essential for any production server regardless of how reliable the underlying infrastructure is. AnubizHost provides backup options that keep your data safe without compromising the offshore privacy protections that make our hosting valuable in the first place.

Why Backups Matter on Offshore Infrastructure

Even highly reliable infrastructure experiences hardware failures, data corruption from software bugs, and human error during server management. Without backups, any of these events can result in permanent data loss. Offshore jurisdiction protects your server from legal interference, but it does not protect your data from technical failures.

AnubizHost's hardware is enterprise-grade and our infrastructure is redundant, but no hosting provider can guarantee zero data loss without client-maintained backups. A drive failure covered by RAID prevents downtime but does not cover accidental file deletion. An application bug that corrupts a database is not a hardware failure at all - RAID does nothing to protect against it. Backups are the essential complement to hardware redundancy.

Backup strategies for offshore servers need to consider where backup data is stored. Backups on the same server as production data are vulnerable to the same hardware failure. Backups at the same data center are vulnerable to the same facility-level event. Backups at a second AnubizHost location in a different country add geographic redundancy and keep your backup data under privacy-friendly legal jurisdiction.

Local Backup Options

Local backups - stored on the same server or at the same data center - provide quick recovery from accidental deletion or application-level corruption. AnubizHost VPS plans include storage that can be partially allocated to local backup retention. For servers with databases, taking daily database dumps and storing them locally with seven-day retention is a minimum viable backup strategy.

Tools for local backups on Linux include rsnapshot (for file system snapshots with incremental backup efficiency), mysqldump or pg_dump for database backups, and restic for encrypted, deduplicated backups to any local storage path. All of these tools are available from standard Linux package repositories and require no additional licensing cost.

Local backups can also be stored on an additional volume attached to your server. Contact our team about additional storage volume options at your server's location. Additional NVMe storage allocated exclusively to backups provides clear separation between production data and backup data on the same server.

Remote Backup to Other AnubizHost Locations

Storing backups at a second AnubizHost location in a different country provides geographic redundancy while keeping backup data under offshore jurisdiction. A production server in Romania with backups in Iceland, for example, protects your data against a data center-level event at either location independently.

AnubizHost offers backup storage server plans at competitive rates. A backup server running rsync or restic as the backup destination can receive automated daily backups from your production server over an encrypted connection. The backup server's storage is sized to hold your required retention period - weekly backups for thirty days, for example, with compression and deduplication reducing actual storage consumption below the raw data size.

Setting up automated remote backups requires configuring SSH key authentication between your production and backup servers, a cron job that runs the backup tool on schedule, and monitoring to alert you if a backup fails to complete. Our support team can provide configuration guidance for common backup tool setups through our encrypted channels.

Backup Best Practices for Offshore Servers

Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule: three copies of your data, on two different storage media, with one copy offsite. For AnubizHost clients, this typically means production data on your primary server (copy 1), local backup on additional storage (copy 2), and remote backup at a second AnubizHost location (copy 3). The second AnubizHost location provides the offsite copy while keeping data under privacy-friendly offshore jurisdiction.

Encrypt your backups before transmission and at rest. Even if backup data is intercepted in transit or the backup server is accessed without authorization, encrypted backups provide no usable data without the decryption key. Restic handles encryption automatically. GPG encryption of backup archives is an alternative for simpler backup setups.

Test your backups regularly. A backup that cannot be restored is not a backup. Schedule monthly restore tests where you retrieve a sample of backed-up data and verify its integrity. Document your restore procedure so that in a real recovery situation you are following a tested procedure rather than improvising under pressure. AnubizHost provides the infrastructure for both production and backup servers - the backup strategy design is your responsibility.
