Achieving Sub-Second Delay in Adult Streaming
Sub-second delay requires departure from traditional HLS-based streaming:
WebRTC delivery: WebRTC achieves 50-200ms latency. Janus, mediasoup, or Livekit SFUs distribute WebRTC streams from one performer to thousands of viewers. CPU cost: approximately 1 core per 100 concurrent viewer connections at 720p.
WHIP/WHEP: WebRTC-HTTP Ingestion Protocol (WHIP) standardizes WebRTC ingest. OBS supports WHIP natively since version 30. Performers broadcast via OBS to a WHIP endpoint; viewers receive via WHEP (WebRTC-HTTP Egress Protocol). Enables professional broadcaster quality at sub-second latency.
Low-Latency HLS (LLHLS): Apple's LLHLS reduces HLS latency to 2-5 seconds. Higher than WebRTC but with much lower server CPU cost. Suitable for semi-interactive content where 3-5 second delay is acceptable.
