Synapse, Conduit, and Dendrite on Tor
Synapse is the reference Matrix homeserver and the most feature complete. Conduit is a Rust homeserver that uses far less memory, well suited to small VPS. Dendrite is the Go homeserver under active development. We deploy all three behind Tor onion v3 with TLS termination inside the hidden service and federation disabled by default. Operators can enable federation against other onion homeservers as needed.
Element Web and Hydrogen Web clients are served over a separate onion so users can join from Tor Browser without installing a desktop client. Mobile clients connect through the standard Matrix port forwarded through Orbot on the device, allowing the homeserver to remain onion only.
Storage Sizing and Media Retention
Matrix homeservers accumulate state and media at a steady pace. We size offshore VPS for long term retention with NVMe storage from 80 GB at entry tier up to several terabytes for larger communities. Media retention policies are configurable; many anonymous communities choose aggressive expiration to limit data sprawl and reduce forensic surface area if a server is ever physically seized.
Optional disk encryption at provisioning time means the media store and database are never written to plaintext disk. Loss of physical control over the VPS does not translate to loss of confidentiality if the operator follows recommended key handling practices.
Operator Anonymity for High Risk Communities
Matrix is end to end encrypted at the message layer but the operator of a homeserver is only anonymous if the hosting is. AnubizHost provides anonymous signup, crypto only billing, and no KYC. The homeserver identity is independent of the AnubizHost account and rotates on operator command. The hosting layer cannot serve as a backchannel for correlation.
Romania and Iceland remain the recommended jurisdictions for long lived anonymous Matrix homeservers. Operators run servers for years on the same anonymous account, accepting Bitcoin or Monero payments for monthly renewals without ever surfacing their real identity.
