Bridges and Rendezvous on a VPS
Briar uses Tor by default for online sync between peers that cannot meet in person. Rendezvous services run on a VPS allow peers to discover each other without exposing IP addresses, and bridges extend reachability in regions where the default Tor entry points are blocked. We deploy Briar bridge software with the latest hardened build on Debian stable, with obfs4 and meek transports pre-configured to maximize censorship resistance.
For operators in censored regions, Briar bridges complement Tor bridges by serving as a known good entry point for the Briar specific protocol. Distribution of bridge addresses to trusted users happens out of band through Briar itself once the initial connection is established.
Operator Anonymity in High Risk Deployments
Briar's primary user base includes activists, journalists, and community organizers in regions with hostile governments. Operators who run bridges for those communities inherit a piece of that threat model. AnubizHost provides anonymous signup, crypto only billing, and no KYC. The bridge endpoint is a piece of infrastructure with no known operator from our side. Funding from grants or community donations can flow through Monero with no link to the bridge IP.

Long term operation is supported through stable IP allocation; we do not rotate VPS IPs without operator consent.
Anonymous month to month billing keeps the bridge alive indefinitely on the same anonymous account. Monero is the recommended payment method for high assurance operators. We do not require renewed identity verification at any tier upgrade.
