Pick the Right File Server Protocol
SFTP is the default for Linux and Mac users. It is built into OpenSSH, encrypted in transit, well supported by every file manager, and trivial to lock down. Samba speaks SMB which Windows uses natively for network drives - mount a Samba share as a drive letter in File Explorer. WebDAV is the cross platform option that works in browsers, Office 365, and most mobile apps. FTPS still has its niche for legacy automation.
Nextcloud sits on top of any of these and adds a Dropbox style web UI, mobile sync clients, calendar, contacts, document collaboration, and end to end encrypted file sharing. Storage and User Management

Nextcloud has its own user database with optional LDAP, SAML, or OIDC integration. Enforce strong passwords or SSH keys, disable password auth where possible, and rotate credentials quarterly.
