Synapse Installation and Configuration
Matrix Synapse is the reference homeserver implementation, maintained by Element. Install it on Debian/Ubuntu via the official package repository or with pip in a virtualenv. Synapse requires PostgreSQL for production deployments (SQLite is only for testing) and a reverse proxy (Nginx or Caddy) for TLS termination on ports 443 and 8448. The homeserver.yaml configuration file controls registration policy (open, invite-only, or disabled), federation enablement, media storage, E2E encryption enforcement, and logging level. AnubizHost VPS plans with 2+ vCPUs and 4+ GB RAM handle a private Synapse instance for a team of dozens comfortably. For larger communities, Synapse horizontal scaling with workers distributes load across multiple processes.
Federation and the Matrix Network
A Matrix homeserver federates with other servers by default - your users on yourdomain.com can message users on matrix.org or any other homeserver. Federation uses port TCP 8448 for server-to-server traffic, which AnubizHost leaves open. You can disable federation entirely to create a closed, private communication platform visible only to users on your homeserver. The .well-known/matrix/server delegation file allows you to run Synapse on a subdomain while your Matrix IDs carry your main domain. Element Web (the browser client) and Element mobile apps work with any homeserver URL. Bridges connect your Matrix server to other networks - Telegram, WhatsApp, IRC, Slack - via open-source bridge software hosted on the same VPS.
Privacy Guarantees of an Offshore Matrix Server
The matrix.org public homeserver is operated by a UK company subject to UK data retention and law enforcement access rules. Your private Synapse on AnubizHost in Iceland or Romania is subject to the laws of those countries - considerably more privacy-friendly for personal and organizational communications. End-to-end encryption with Megolm means room messages are encrypted client-side; the server stores only ciphertext and cannot decrypt messages even under compulsion. Configure Synapse's log_config to suppress user IP logging. Enable message retention policies to auto-purge rooms after a configurable period. The combination of offshore jurisdiction, E2E encryption, and log minimization produces the most private Matrix deployment available.
