The Tahoe-LAFS Security Model
Tahoe-LAFS encrypts and erasure codes data on the client before any byte reaches a storage node. The storage nodes hold opaque ciphertext shards and cannot read, verify, or modify the underlying content. Access is governed by cryptographic capabilities - URI fragments that grant read or write to specific files or directories. Lose the capability and the file is gone forever. Hold the capability and the file is yours regardless of which storage nodes are online.
This least authority model means a compromised storage node leaks nothing useful. A subpoena to a storage node retrieves only encrypted shards.
