Samba vs Other File Protocols
SMB is the native Windows file sharing protocol. Mac and Linux both speak SMB natively in modern versions so a Samba share works as a universal network drive across all three operating systems. Compared to SFTP, SMB has better support for file locking, NTFS style ACLs, and integration with the Windows credential manager. Compared to NFS, SMB works without manual UID mapping which simplifies multi user setups.
The downside is that SMB has historically had a wider attack surface than SFTP. Modern Samba on a hardened VPS is safe when exposed only over VPN. We strongly recommend never exposing port 445 directly to the public internet - put Samba behind WireGuard, Tailscale, or any other VPN and access the share over the encrypted tunnel.
