Three Layers of Encryption
Layer one is client side encryption. Tools like restic, borg, and Duplicati encrypt data on your machine with a passphrase that never leaves the client. The server side stores opaque ciphertext and cannot read the contents even with full access to the disk. This protects against compromise of the backup server itself.
Layer two is encryption in transit. SFTP, HTTPS, and SSH all encrypt the wire so a network observer sees only cipher streams. AnubizHost VPS ship with sshd configured for modern cipher suites and Caddy automates TLS certificate provisioning. Layer three is encryption at rest with LUKS on the VPS itself, protecting against datacenter side threats like drive replacement or decommissioning.
LUKS Setup at Install Time
AnubizHost lets you boot the VPS from a custom ISO so you can install Debian, Ubuntu, or Arch with LUKS encrypted root from day one. Use a strong passphrase or a key file stored on a hardware token. After install you boot the VPS via the web console, enter the passphrase, and then SSH access works normally. The disk stays encrypted at rest and only readable when the system is running with the key loaded.
For unattended reboot consider dropbear or systemd cryptenroll with a remote unlock pattern - enter the passphrase over SSH after the kernel boots but before the rootfs mounts. This sacrifices some convenience for the benefit of an encrypted root that resists offline forensic imaging.
