JoinMarket Roles
Two main roles: makers (yield generators) provide liquidity and earn fees, takers initiate CoinJoins and pay fees. Both connect via IRC for orderbook coordination. The directory nodes are run by community operators; technically not coordinators but the closest analog.
Hosting Requirements
Yield generators need uptime: a maker that goes offline mid-CoinJoin frustrates takers. Bitcoin Core full node underneath (pruned acceptable for makers, archival for advanced setups), Tor for IRC plus peer communication, and a wallet with sufficient liquidity.
Wallet Security
Critical: the wallet on the server has spending capability. Use a hot wallet with only the funds you want to expose. Cold storage backup of the master seed; do not store the seed on the server filesystem. Use jmwalletd's encrypted persistence.
Tor Integration
JoinMarket IRC and peer connections should run over Tor. Our hosting pre-configures torsocks for the JoinMarket daemon. No clearnet IP correlation between your wallet and other JM participants.
