Run Your Own VPN on Offshore VPS Infrastructure

Commercial VPN providers are often subject to logging requirements, government data requests, and warrant canaries. A self-hosted VPN on an offshore server that you control removes these trust assumptions - you are the VPN provider, and the server holds no logs you have not explicitly configured to record.

The offshore jurisdiction provides an additional layer: requests for data from the server must go through Romanian, Icelandic, or other local legal processes rather than being satisfied by a US-resident VPN company responding to FBI warrants. This is a fundamentally different threat model from commercial VPN services.

WireGuard is the recommended VPN protocol for self-hosted setups. It is significantly faster than OpenVPN, uses modern cryptography (ChaCha20, Poly1305, Curve25519), has a minimal attack surface (approximately 4,000 lines of code vs OpenVPN's hundreds of thousands), and is straightforward to configure on Linux.

By default, a Linux VPS logs to /var/log/syslog and application-specific log files.
