FreePBX Self-Host in Iceland on Offshore VPS
Iceland's combination of constitutional-equivalent privacy posture and geothermal-powered datacenters makes it a strong home for a FreePBX install handling sensitive call metadata. AnubizHost provisions FreePBX 17 on Debian 12 in Reykjavik with PJSIP, fail2ban, and the standard hardening for an internet-exposed PBX.

Iceland Privacy for PBX Metadata
The Icelandic Data Protection Authority (Persoonuvernd) applies GDPR-equivalent rules through the EEA agreement. There is no blanket telecom data retention requirement for non-licensed operators. For a small FreePBX install serving an organisation, this means you set your own CDR retention policy with no externally mandated minimum.
The IMMI parliamentary resolution (2010) committed Iceland to a model law package on source protection and intermediary liability. Implementation has been partial but the political direction is clear.
Geothermal Power
Iceland's electricity grid is roughly 70% geothermal and 30% hydroelectric. For PBX operators tracking Scope 2 emissions or ESG-adjacent procurement, this matters. Datacenter PUE in Reykjavik is competitive and the underlying energy is fully renewable.
This is not a performance characteristic. It is a procurement-side feature that some buyers care about.
Latency from Reykjavik
Reykjavik to London 22ms, to Frankfurt 38ms, to NYC 45ms, to Stockholm 35ms. For a PBX serving EU and US customers, voice quality stays inside the toll-quality target. For Asian reachability, count on 200ms+ round-trip - acceptable for voice but you may want a separate APAC node.
SIP trunk reachability from Reykjavik: most major EU wholesalers terminate cleanly. Some Tier 2 carriers route via Stockholm or Frankfurt, adding a hop.
FreePBX Build and Modules
FreePBX 17 on Debian 12, PJSIP-only, Intrusion Detection enabled, Backup and Restore scheduled nightly. Standard modules: Extensions, Trunks, Inbound/Outbound Routes, IVR, Time Conditions, Ring Groups, Queues, Voicemail Blasting, Conference Bridges. Commercial modules from Sangoma available if you bring the license.
For wideband audio (G.722, Opus), the default codec preference order is set Opus, G.722, G.711alaw, G.711ulaw. Adjust per region depending on what your endpoints negotiate.
Backup and DR
Nightly backup to a separate NVMe volume, retention 14 days included. Off-site replication to our Finland or Romania location available as add-on. The Backup and Restore module produces self-contained archives that restore cleanly to a fresh FreePBX 17 install of the same minor version.
