FreePBX Self-Host in Iceland on Offshore VPS

The Icelandic Data Protection Authority (Persoonuvernd) applies GDPR-equivalent rules through the EEA agreement. There is no blanket telecom data retention requirement for non-licensed operators. For a small FreePBX install serving an organisation, this means you set your own CDR retention policy with no externally mandated minimum.

The IMMI parliamentary resolution (2010) committed Iceland to a model law package on source protection and intermediary liability. Implementation has been partial but the political direction is clear.

Iceland's electricity grid is roughly 70% geothermal and 30% hydroelectric. For PBX operators tracking Scope 2 emissions or ESG-adjacent procurement, this matters. Datacenter PUE in Reykjavik is competitive and the underlying energy is fully renewable.

SIP trunk reachability from Reykjavik: most major EU wholesalers terminate cleanly. Some Tier 2 carriers route via Stockholm or Frankfurt, adding a hop.

Nightly backup to a separate NVMe volume, retention 14 days included. Off-site replication to our Finland or Romania location available as add-on. The Backup and Restore module produces self-contained archives that restore cleanly to a fresh FreePBX 17 install of the same minor version.
