Self-Hosted ownCloud Infinite Scale in Romania
ownCloud and Nextcloud share the same 2016 fork ancestry but ownCloud Infinite Scale (oCIS) is a different product: a single Go binary, no PHP runtime, no MariaDB requirement (uses embedded KV stores), built around S3-style object storage from day one. It is the better pick when you want a lower memory footprint or when your file workload is millions of small objects rather than dozens of huge ones. Romania gives you an EU GDPR jurisdiction outside Fourteen Eyes. This guide covers picking the Anubiz Host Romania VPS tier, deploying the oCIS binary, S3 backend with MinIO or external, and backup.

Why ownCloud Infinite Scale Over Nextcloud
Single Go binary, RAM idle around 200 MB. No PHP, no MariaDB. Native S3 backend. Much faster on millions of small files than Nextcloud's PHP+MariaDB architecture. Trade off: fewer apps (no Talk, no Notes, smaller ecosystem), and the desktop client matches the older ownCloud client not the newer Nextcloud one.
VPS Plan
Anubiz Romania VPS 1 GB for households, 2 GB for teams. The bottleneck is S3 backend IOPS more than the oCIS binary itself; choose a Storage VPS tier if you also run MinIO on the same node.
Deployment
Download the oCIS binary from get.owncloud.com/ocis. Systemd unit. Environment: OCIS_URL=https://cloud.example.org, OCIS_INSECURE=false, STORAGE_USERS_DRIVER=s3ng and the S3 endpoint. Caddy in front terminating TLS.
Encryption Truth
Files at rest: encrypted only if your S3 backend encrypts (server-side AWS-style; server holds key). oCIS does not yet have a mature E2EE app. Notes, calendar, contacts: not E2EE. This is a control-the-server tool, not a zero-knowledge tool.
S3 Backend Options
MinIO on the same node for simplicity. External Wasabi or B2 for cost. Self-host MinIO on a second Anubiz VPS if you want regional separation. Bucket policy: oCIS user only.
Backups
Snapshot the oCIS metadata directory and the S3 bucket. Restic the metadata. mc mirror the bucket to an Anubiz Iceland VPS MinIO instance. 14/8/12.
