Matrix federation means a homeserver communicates with other homeservers across the internet to exchange messages. The homeserver stores message content for its own users, which makes the hosting jurisdiction relevant for legal exposure. Conduit is the Rust implementation, much lighter on resources: a 100 user Conduit fits in 1 GB RAM and a 1000 user Conduit in 4 GB RAM. Federation Operational Notes
Matrix federation requires properly configured DNS SRV records and TLS certificates on port 8448 (or port 443 with .well-known delegation). Configure your homeserver to federate with all major homeservers including matrix.org by default. Anubiz Host provides clean Iceland IPs not blocked by other homeserver federation policies. For private federations, configure ACLs to restrict federation to a specific set of partner homeservers. Snapshot backups for fast restoration after schema upgrades.
