Why Issabel
Issabel forked from Elastix in 2016 when 3CX acquired Elastix's commercial brand. The fork preserved the GPL-licensed core: Asterisk, FreePBX modules (older fork), call centre suite, email, fax, IM. For operators who used Elastix in production and never want to deal with proprietary licensing, Issabel is the continuity option.
The trade-off is a smaller community than FreePBX, slower module updates, and Asterisk version lag. Issabel 4.x ships Asterisk 16. Production users plan for end-of-life of Asterisk 16 and migration to FreePBX 17 or vanilla Asterisk 20.
Romania Hosting Profile
Same Romania benefits as other PBX builds: EU networking, Bucharest IXP peering, no blanket data retention, NVMe storage, 1Gbps unmetered. CPU sizing for Issabel mirrors FreePBX: 2 vCPU handles 50 extensions, 4 vCPU for 150, 8 vCPU for 500.
The CentOS Stream or Rocky Linux base is heavier than Debian (more services running by default). 50GB minimum disk, 80GB recommended.
Migration from Elastix
Operators on Elastix 4 can migrate to Issabel 4 with database export and module restoration. The schema is compatible. PJSIP migration from chan_sip is needed regardless because Asterisk 16 deprecated chan_sip for the late releases.
For Elastix 2.5 or earlier you need a phased upgrade. We document the path.
Modules and Add-ons
Issabel includes the call centre suite (queues, supervisor dashboards, agent login), email integration, fax-to-email, IM, and the standard PBX modules. Commercial modules are not available since the fork is fully open source.
For Cyrillic, Romanian or other non-Latin locale UI support, Issabel ships translation packs. The IVR voice prompts use the Asterisk core sounds packages.
Anti-Fraud and Recording
fail2ban with the asterisk filter, allowlist for trunk peers, outbound CPS cap on dialplan. Standard hardening identical to our FreePBX builds.
