Mail-in-a-Box VPS for Turnkey Personal Mail Servers

Mail-in-a-Box is the gold standard for one-domain personal mail servers. It bundles Postfix, Dovecot, Nextcloud, Roundcube, and DNS in a single Ubuntu-based installer that asks almost nothing of the operator. Anubiz Host offshore VPS gives Mail-in-a-Box the clean static IPv4 and unblocked port 25 it needs to actually deliver mail to Gmail and Outlook without immediately landing in spam.

Why Mail-in-a-Box for Personal Mail

Mail-in-a-Box exists for one reason: most people who want to escape Gmail give up on self-hosting at the SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and rDNS step. Mail-in-a-Box automates every one of those steps, including running an authoritative DNS server for your domain so you do not have to fight with Cloudflare or Namecheap UI to add 12 records by hand. The trade-off is that Mail-in-a-Box is opinionated. It expects to own your entire domain, runs on Ubuntu 22.04 specifically, and is not designed for multi-tenant operation. For a single user or family domain that wants webmail, contacts and calendar sync via Nextcloud, and standard IMAP, it is unbeatable. Anubiz Host customers running Mail-in-a-Box typically pick a 2 vCPU and 4GB RAM offshore VPS, which leaves enough headroom for Nextcloud thumbnails and Rspamd scanning under normal personal volume.

Installation and DNS Cutover

Install Mail-in-a-Box on a fresh Ubuntu 22.04 Anubiz Host VPS with curl -s https://mailinabox.email/setup.sh | sudo -E bash. The installer asks for your hostname, the admin email, and the public IPv4 address, then provisions every service end to end. After installation, Mail-in-a-Box hands you a set of glue records to set at your domain registrar. You point the registrar nameservers at ns1.box.yourdomain.com and ns2.box.yourdomain.com, and from that moment your VPS is authoritative for your zone. All SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and PTR alignment is handled automatically. Set the rDNS in the Anubiz Host customer panel to box.yourdomain.com so the PTR record matches the HELO banner. Anubiz Host support can verify the PTR alignment from the outside before you start sending real mail.

Maintenance, Updates, and Limits

Mail-in-a-Box maintenance is intentionally boring. Run the mailinabox upgrade command quarterly. The admin panel surfaces system health checks, including DNSSEC status, certificate expiry, and disk usage. As long as those checks stay green, your server is in a known-good state. The main limits worth knowing are: Mail-in-a-Box does not support adding alternative MTA configurations easily, you cannot run a custom Nginx vhost on the same host, and it expects to manage all DNS for your domain. Once you accept those constraints, the system is rock-solid. For users who outgrow Mail-in-a-Box, the migration path is to export Maildir from Dovecot and import into a Mailcow or hand-built Postfix and Dovecot stack on a larger Anubiz Host VPS. Until then, Mail-in-a-Box on offshore VPS is the simplest possible answer to leaving Gmail behind.
