What Mainstream Cloud Providers Require
AWS, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, Linode/Akamai, Vultr - all require the same things before you can deploy anything:
- Verified identity: Name, address, and usually a phone number. Some now require government ID for higher tiers.
- Credit card or bank account: Tied to your identity. Every charge is a financial record.
- Compliance with US law: Their servers are subject to US data requests, National Security Letters, FISA orders, and standard law enforcement process. GDPR applies to their EU regions but does not override national security requests.
- Terms enforcement: They will suspend accounts for content they decide violates their ToS - which is broadly written. Content that is legal in your jurisdiction may still result in suspension.
For most use cases, none of this matters. Running a SaaS app, an e-commerce site, or standard web infrastructure? The KYC and jurisdiction questions are irrelevant to your actual risk.
When Offshore Hosting Is the Right Choice
There are four categories of operators who need offshore hosting as a technical requirement, not a preference:
1. Operators running privacy infrastructure. VPN exit nodes, Tor relays, I2P nodes, privacy proxy services. US cloud providers will suspend these under abuse complaints or automatically under their anti-abuse systems. Offshore providers with strong jurisdiction and abuse-tolerance policies keep these services online.
2. Operators in countries with domestic internet surveillance. An operator in Russia, Iran, Turkey, or similar environments may be legally prohibited from hosting certain content domestically. Offshore hosting with crypto payment provides access to infrastructure that domestic surveillance cannot easily reach or compel takedown on.
3. Operators where payment privacy is a hard requirement. Some use cases are legal but payment-processor-hostile: crypto exchanges below certain thresholds, political content in sensitive jurisdictions, adult content in certain markets. Credit card processors routinely terminate accounts in these categories regardless of legality. Offshore hosting with crypto billing solves the payment layer.
4. Operators running content under active legal pressure. Journalism platforms, whistleblower drop sites, political opposition content, security research hosting. US/EU providers comply with standard legal process quickly. Offshore providers require a local court order - a much higher bar.
When Offshore Hosting Is NOT the Right Choice
Be honest about your requirements before choosing offshore. Offshore hosting has real tradeoffs:
- Performance: Mainstream cloud providers have dozens of regions worldwide with optimized networks. AnubizHost operates Romania and Iceland. If your users are in California, a Romanian VPS will have higher latency than us-west-2.
- Support ecosystem: AWS, GCP, and Azure have enormous documentation, community support, and managed services (databases, queues, CDNs). AnubizHost is VPS and dedicated servers - you manage your stack.
- Price per raw compute: Per-CPU and per-GB pricing is competitive at AnubizHost but not always cheaper than discounted cloud rates. We do not compete on raw compute cost for standard workloads.
- Compliance certifications: SOC2, ISO27001, HIPAA, PCI-DSS are meaningful for enterprise buyers. AnubizHost is not marketed for regulated enterprise compliance. If your use case requires these certifications, offshore privacy VPS is not the right fit.
The Comparison That Matters
| Requirement | Mainstream Cloud | AnubizHost Offshore |
|---|---|---|
| No KYC signup | No - ID required | Yes - email only |
| Crypto payment | No | Yes (BTC, XMR, USDT, ETH, LTC) |
| Monero payment | No | Yes |
| DMCA resistance | No - US law applies | Yes - Romanian court order required |
| Tor/VPN-friendly | Often suspended | Yes |
| Global CDN edges | Yes (50+ regions) | No |
| Managed database, queues | Yes | No |
| SOC2/HIPAA certification | Yes (varies) | No |
| KVM virtualization | Yes | Yes |
| NVMe SSD storage | Yes | Yes |
| 1 Gbps+ uplink | Yes | Yes |
| Uptime SLA | 99.9-99.99% | 99.95% |
The right provider depends entirely on which row of that table is your constraint. If the top 5 rows are not your concern, mainstream cloud is fine. If any of them are hard requirements, offshore is the correct technical choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is offshore hosting slower than mainstream cloud?
It depends on where your users are. Romania is excellent for European users. For users in Asia or North America, the latency difference is measurable. AnubizHost's Iceland node adds an option for North Atlantic latency.
Can I use offshore hosting for a standard e-commerce site?
Yes, technically. But if your e-commerce site accepts credit cards, your payment processor (Stripe, Braintree) has its own compliance requirements that are independent of your hosting jurisdiction. The hosting jurisdiction matters for content and data requests, not for your payment processor's terms.
Do offshore providers share data with foreign governments?
Legitimate offshore providers share data only when required by local court order. AnubizHost complies with valid Romanian court orders. We do not comply with foreign orders that have not gone through Romanian legal process. We cannot share what we do not retain - minimal logging is a feature.
