Pleroma / Akkoma Instance on an Anubiz Romania VPS
Pleroma (and its active fork Akkoma) is the lower-footprint fediverse server: BEAM/OTP runtime, simpler database schema, no Sidekiq, no Ruby. For an admin who finds Mastodon's resource appetite excessive, Pleroma runs a serious community instance on 4-8 GB RAM where Mastodon needs 16. Romania VPS Mini-V or V tier matches Pleroma well. Legal posture is the same standard EU intermediary framework; you moderate, you handle DSA NTD.

Why Pleroma Over Mastodon
Pleroma's BEAM runtime is meaningfully lighter than Rails + Sidekiq. A 500-user Pleroma instance runs comfortably in 4 GB RAM where the equivalent Mastodon needs 10. For an admin running a personal or small-community instance on a budget VPS, Pleroma is the operationally sane choice.
Akkoma is the actively maintained fork; we recommend it over upstream Pleroma for new deployments.
Sizing on Romania VPS
Mini-V ($49.99): suitable for single-user or small private instance. V ($99.99): suitable for 1000-2000 user community.
PostgreSQL
Pleroma uses PostgreSQL similarly to Mastodon but with simpler schemas. Tuning is identical: shared_buffers 25 percent, effective_cache_size 75 percent, autovacuum aggressive.
Federation and Moderation
You moderate. We do not see content. CSAM at infrastructure layer on credible notice. DSA NTD applies.
