Tor Browser Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

Start with these basic checks before trying advanced solutions:

1. Check your internet connection: Open a regular browser and verify your internet works. If your regular internet is down, Tor won't work either.
2. Restart Tor Browser: Close Tor Browser completely and relaunch it. Click "Connect" and wait at least 30 seconds. Many connection issues resolve with a simple restart.
3. Check the time and date: Tor requires your system clock to be accurate. If your computer's time is wrong by more than a few minutes, Tor cannot establish connections. Sync your system clock.
4. Disable your firewall temporarily: Firewalls can block Tor's connections. Temporarily disable your firewall to test. If Tor works with the firewall off, add Tor Browser as an allowed application.

4. Use BridgeDB: Visit bridges.torproject.org from a non-Tor browser to get bridge addresses

• Avoid peak times: Tor traffic varies by time of day. If speeds are unusually slow, try again later.
• Check for VPN conflicts: If you're using VPN + Tor, some VPN protocols can slow Tor significantly. Try WireGuard (fastest) instead of OpenVPN.
• Update Tor Browser: Older versions may have performance issues. Check for updates in the hamburger menu → Help → About Tor Browser.
• Disable unnecessary extensions: If you've added extensions to Tor Browser (not recommended), they can slow down browsing. Use the default configuration.
