Tor Bridges & Pluggable Transports Guide

Some countries and networks block connections to the Tor network. Bridges are unlisted Tor relays that help you connect when direct access is blocked. Pluggable transports (obfs4, meek, Snowflake) disguise your Tor traffic so it looks like regular internet traffic.

Start a Brief

When You Need Bridges

  • China — The Great Firewall blocks Tor by default. Bridges with obfs4 or meek are essential.
  • Iran — Tor is periodically blocked. Snowflake and meek bridges work best.
  • Russia — Tor partially blocked since 2021. obfs4 bridges usually work.
  • Corporate/school networks — Some firewalls block Tor traffic.
  • Anywhere Tor is slow or unreachable — Bridges can sometimes provide faster connections.

Types of Pluggable Transports

  • obfs4 — Most widely used. Makes Tor traffic look like random noise. Effective against DPI (Deep Packet Inspection).
  • meek-azure — Disguises Tor traffic as Microsoft Azure HTTPS traffic. Very hard to block without blocking Azure. Slower but more resistant to censorship.
  • Snowflake — Uses WebRTC peer-to-peer connections through volunteer browsers. Traffic looks like video calls. Newest and hardest to block.

How to Configure Bridges in Tor Browser

  1. Open Tor Browser → click "Configure" (or go to Settings → Connection)
  2. Enable "Use a bridge"
  3. Choose "Select a built-in bridge" → pick obfs4, meek-azure, or Snowflake
  4. Click "Connect"

If built-in bridges don't work, request custom bridges:

  • Visit bridges.torproject.org from a regular browser
  • Or email [email protected] from a Gmail or Riseup address
  • Paste the bridge lines into Tor Browser's bridge configuration

Hosting in Censored Regions

If your audience is in a censored country, offering a .onion version of your site gives them censorship-resistant access. AnubizHost provides Tor hosting with automatic .onion configuration — your users access your service through Tor, bypassing government blocks.
