XMPP Server Selection
Prosody: lightweight Lua-based, simple configuration. ejabberd: Erlang, more scalable, complex configuration. Both support OMEMO and OTR. Pick Prosody for community-scale (under 1000 users); ejabberd for larger deployments.
Federation Over Tor
XMPP server-to-server federation works between onion XMPP servers when both sides configure Tor SOCKS for s2s connections. Federating with clearnet XMPP requires the clearnet side to support Tor, which most do not.
Client Compatibility
Conversations (Android), Gajim (desktop), Profanity (terminal), Monal (iOS) all support Tor-routed XMPP. OMEMO key verification works identically over Tor.
