VPNs and Tor serve complementary privacy functions. A VPN encrypts traffic between the user and the VPN server, hiding browsing activity from the local network. Tor adds multiple layers of encryption and routes traffic through three relays, making it extremely difficult to correlate entry and exit traffic. Combining both creates defense-in-depth:
- Tor over VPN - Users connect to VPN first, then to Tor. The VPN hides Tor usage from the ISP, while Tor hides the destination from the VPN.
- VPN over Tor - Users connect to Tor first, then to VPN. The VPN sees only a Tor exit node IP, not the user's real IP.
- Management via Tor - VPN management panel, billing, and support are accessible only via .onion, protecting operator anonymity.
AnubizHost enables VPN operators to build privacy-first services where even the VPN infrastructure itself is anonymized.
