Tor Tutorial

Setting Up an obfs4 Tor Bridge on Offshore VPS

Tor bridges with obfs4 transport help users in censored networks (China, Iran, Russia) reach the Tor network undetected. Running a bridge on offshore VPS is one of the highest-leverage privacy actions you can take. AnubizHost provides bridge-friendly VPS - we do not block Tor egress and we welcome bridge operators.

Need this done for your project?

We implement, you ship. Async, documented, done in days.

Start a Brief

What obfs4 Does

obfs4 wraps Tor traffic in a stream that looks like random bytes, defeating deep packet inspection that targets Tor protocol fingerprints. Iranian, Chinese and Russian state filters cannot identify it as Tor.

Install

On Debian 12: apt install tor obfs4proxy. Edit /etc/tor/torrc, enable BridgeRelay 1, set ORPort and ExtORPort, add ServerTransportPlugin obfs4 exec /usr/bin/obfs4proxy. Restart tor and grab your bridge line from /var/lib/tor/pt_state/obfs4_bridgeline.txt.

Publish or Keep Private

Publish via BridgeDB to help random censored users, or keep your bridge line private for specific operators. Both modes are useful.

Why AnubizHost

We do not throttle Tor traffic. Our offshore VPS sits in network-neutral jurisdictions. See Tor hosting and offshore VPS.
