Node.js runtime: 1.5-3 GB resident on a mid-size instance. PostgreSQL: 3-4 GB shared_buffers. Redis: 500 MB-1 GB. MeiliSearch: 2-4 GB if enabled. Total resident around 8-12 GB for a 500-1500 user community. Romania VPS V handles this comfortably.
Misskey writes media aggressively (custom emoji, drive uploads, remote media cache). Plan 1-2 TB media storage at the 12-month horizon.
MeiliSearch and Tantivy Alternatives
MeiliSearch adds the powerful full-text search Misskey users expect. It is RAM-heavy (2-4 GB working set). The newer Misskey forks (Sharkey, Iceshrimp) support Tantivy via the Postgres-backed sonic alternative which is lighter.
PostgreSQL Tuning
Same fediverse profile: shared_buffers 25 percent, effective_cache_size 75 percent, autovacuum aggressive. Misskey notes table grows fast on federation.
Federation Note
You moderate. CSAM at infrastructure layer on credible notice. Misskey instances historically attract more federation complexity (custom emoji licensing, art licensing) - have a clear policy.
